Meaning of the Name

The meaning of the name is City of angels, great city,  the residence of the sacred jewel of Indra [Emerald Buddha], the impregnable city of God, the world’s great capital, adorned with nine precious gems, full of huge royal palaces, to the heavenly home of the reborn God same city, which was given by Indra and built by Vishnukarm.

While Bangkok has become customary international designation, use the short form is usually Krung Thep (“City of Angels”). The official name, for example, on license plates, is Krung Thep Maha Nakhon.

The arm of Bangkok shows the god Indra on Erawan, a mythological elephant, which may in some images also three heads. In his hand Indra holds a lightning bolt. The emblem is based on a drawing by Somdet Chaofa Kromphraya Narisra-Nuwattiwong.
