The urban area of metropolitan Bangkok (Bangkok Metropolitan Area – “BMR”) extends beyond the borders of Bangkok province and extends into the neighboring provinces of Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani. Today’s Bangkok was founded in 1972 from the merger of the old province of Bangkok – Changwat Phra Nakhon – and the Thonburi province.

Bangkok maintains partnerships with the following cities:

  • Since 19 February 1962: Washington D. C., USA
  • Since 26 May 1993: Beijing, People’s Republic of China
  • Since 19 June 1997: Moscow, Russia
  • Since 23 November 2005: Chaozhou, China
  • Since 16 June 2006: Seoul, South Korea

In addition to twinning Bangkok still has many cities and towns friendships contacts.
